“Brian James Simmons!”

Brian was in the middle of dreaming he was lying next to Marcie in bed. Her hair was so soft. And her legs intertwined between his were so warm. He inhaled her skin and smiled. Just before he took another breath, he jerked from the scream that was finally catching up to his brain.

“Brian!”

He fought to open his eyes. It was bright. He recognized the wall. It was the room above the garage. That ugly picture his mother-in-law gave them of a moose drinking water hung on it. He then looked to who was pressed tightly against him…her hair draped on her shoulder, his right hand on her thigh underneath the blanket. Her leg moved. Wait. The hair was dark. But the voice was Marcie’s. What the—

“Are you going to wake up? Or am I going to have to get a hose?”

He turned over to see Marcie standing over him. Her arms were bent and resting on her hips. Kate began to move. She turned over and looked up and him. She rubbed her eyes and appeared to be disoriented. He moved his legs so she could free herself from the spoon they had mastered sometime in the middle of the night.

“Marcie, can you keep it down? The whole neighborhood is going to wake up.” He pulled himself up, still not fully aware where he was. Wasn’t it Marcie in his dream just now? Was this a dream? Wasn’t it her that his hands began to caress half asleep? Oh, shit! He jumped up and fell backward against the couch.

“Keep it down? What in the world are you doing here? With her?” She motioned to Kate.

Kate pulled at her coat and wrapped the blanket around her naked legs.

It was coming to him now. He rubbed his eyes and tried to dull the pounding in his head from the sudden rush of blood. “We were locked out of our apartment house. I came here so we wouldn’t freeze to death in my car.”

“Isn’t that a lovely story.”

“What? Do you honestly think I’d come here if there wasn’t a reason? Oh, and it was nice to see all of my things thrown up here.”

She tucked her hair and looked to the ground. “I’m doing some redecorating. I needed the space.”

He jumped up from the floor. “Redecorating? Try erasing.”

“Just get your stuff and your…” She pointed to Kate and finished her thought. “Your friend and leave. I’m not sure what I’d tell my daughter if she were to come out here and see her father and some…some person in her home. It’s not cool, Brian.” She turned and walked out.

Kate rose to a crouching position.

Brian looked at her. “Kate, I’m—”

She pushed her hair back and lunged to get her shoes. They were scattered on the floor beside where they slept. “You don’t have to say anything, Brian.” She checked her watch. “I’m going to be late.”

He stood and picked up the blanket. The pillows were tossed around. He pulled them into a pile and thought back on that feeling he experienced before Marcie yelled.
